جیر جیر

Summer nights in northern Iran, especially in gardens around Rasht and Gorgan, fill with the jir jir of crickets so loud children mimic it as a game. The word also shows up in lullabies and rural poetry as a marker of warm, humid evening air. It is one of those rare sounds Iranians associate with peace.
