What it means

جزیره (jazire) is the Persian word for “island.” It is an Arabic loanword (الجزيرة, al-jazira), built from the root j-z-r meaning “to cut off, to separate.” An island is, literally, the piece of land that has been cut off by water. Persian inherited the word and naturalized it; you will not hear the Pure Persian alternative for it in everyday speech.

The Iranian islands worth knowing

Iran has several islands in the Persian Gulf, but three carry weight in everyday Iranian conversation. کیش (Kish) is the duty-free vacation island, the closest thing Iran has to a beach resort, drawing domestic tourists who want a brief taste of relaxed dress codes and cheaper electronics. قشم (Qeshm) is the largest, geologically dramatic, with salt caves and mangrove forests. هرمز (Hormoz) is the small red-soiled one famous for its rainbow beaches and the hand-painted edible-pigment art of local women.

Cultural note

تنگه هرمز (tange-ye Hormoz), the Strait of Hormuz, sits at the mouth of the Persian Gulf and is the single most strategically watched waterway on the planet. Roughly a fifth of all globally traded oil passes through it. When Iranian news mentions جزیره هرمز in a political context, it is usually shorthand for that geopolitical pressure point: who controls the strait, who patrols it, who threatens to close it.

Inside Iran, the islands also carry a sovereignty charge. ابوموسی (Abu Musa) and the two تنب (Tonb) islands have been under Iranian administration since 1971 and are claimed by the United Arab Emirates. Iranian schoolchildren learn the line جزایر سه‌گانه (jazâyer-e segâne), “the three islands,” as part of national geography lessons. Bringing up these names with an Iranian is never neutral small talk.

Plural and grammar

The Arabic broken plural جزایر (jazâyer) is used in formal Persian (newspapers, government documents). In speech, Iranians often add the regular Persian plural marker: جزیره‌ها (jazire-hâ).
