What it means
گرفتار (gereftâr) means caught up in something, stuck, entangled, or troubled by an obligation or problem. The word is formed from گرفت, the past stem of the pure Persian verb گرفتن (gereftan, to take, to catch, to seize), plus the suffix -âr, a productive Persian suffix that forms agent-like nouns and adjectives, seen also in خریدار (kharidâr, buyer) and گفتار (goftâr, speech). گرفتار therefore means the one who has been caught or the state of being caught. گرفتار بودن (gereftâr budan) means to be stuck or tied up with something, and گرفتار شدن (gereftâr shodan) means to get caught up in a problem or to fall into trouble. It applies equally to being busy with a task and to being in serious difficulty.
How to use it
- الان گرفتارم، بعداً زنگ میزنم (alân gereftâram, ba’dan zang mizanam) “I’m caught up right now, I’ll call you later.”
- گرفتار مشکل بزرگی شدم (gereftâr-e moshkel-e bozorgi shodam) “I got caught up in a big problem.”
- آدم گرفتاری بود (âdam-e gereftâri bud) “He/she was a person with a lot of troubles.”
- گرفتارش نشو (gereftâresh nasho) “Don’t get entangled with him/her / Don’t get involved with that.”
Cultural note
گرفتار is one of the most honestly useful words for describing modern Iranian life. «گرفتارم» (I’m caught up / I’m stuck with things) is the single most common explanation for missing a call, being late, or declining a plan, carrying none of the dismissiveness that “I’m busy” can have in English. It implies you are not in control of your time and invites sympathy rather than judgment. The word also has a heavier shade: گرفتار شدن به چیزی can mean falling into a trap or a bad situation, so the word sits comfortably between mild inconvenience and serious entanglement.
