What it means
فروش (forush) means “sale” or “the act of selling.” It comes from the ancient Persian verb فروختن (forukhtan), which means “to sell,” making it a native Persian word with no Arabic or European borrowing. You will see it everywhere: on shop signs reading “فروش ویژه” (special sale), in job titles like فروشنده (salesperson), and in everyday speech when someone asks what price something is going for. Its natural opposite is خرید (kharid), meaning “purchase.”
How to use it
- این مغازه فروش لباس داره. (in maghaze forush-e lebas dare.) “This shop sells clothes.”
- تصمیم به فروش خونهام گرفتم. (tasmim be forush-e khoone-am gereftam.) “I decided to sell my house.”
- قیمت فروش چنده؟ (gheymat-e forush chande?) “What is the selling price?”
- فروش خوبی داشتیم این ماه. (forush-e khoobi dashtim in mah.) “We had good sales this month.”
Cultural note
In Iranian bazaars and shops, the word فروش appears constantly on handwritten signs and printed banners. A sign reading «فروش فوری» (urgent sale) or «حراج» (clearance sale) draws immediate attention from shoppers. The verb فروختن also carries a figurative edge: saying someone «خودشو فروخته» (has sold himself) is a pointed accusation of betrayal or corruption, so the word travels well beyond commercial life into moral commentary.
