فرستادن

What it means

فرستادن (ferestâdan) means to send, to dispatch, or to forward. It is a pure Persian verb with roots traceable to Old Iranian, making it one of the older members of the basic vocabulary. The present stem is فرست (ferest), giving forms like می‌فرستم (mi-ferestam, I send), می‌فرستی (mi-feresti, you send), and so on. It is used for sending physical objects, sending a person on a mission, and in modern usage for sending messages, emails, and files. In written and digital contexts you may encounter ارسال کردن (ersâl kardan) as an alternative, but فرستادن remains the most natural spoken form for any act of sending.

How to use it

• فردا برات می‌فرستم (fardâ barât mi-ferestam) “I’ll send it to you tomorrow.”
• پیامش رو فرستاد (payâm-ash ro ferestâd) “He sent his message.”
• چرا نفرستادی؟ (cherâ naferestâdi?) “Why didn’t you send it?”
• بسته رو فرستادن (baste ro ferestâdan) “They sent the package.”

Cultural note

Before digital messaging, فرستادن a letter or parcel through the postal service, پست (post), was a meaningful act of connection between Iranians living apart. The phrase نامه فرستادن (nâme ferestâdan, to send a letter) carries a warmer and more deliberate connotation than its digital equivalent. Older Iranians and those with family abroad often distinguish between فرستادن a proper letter and simply sending a text, treating the former as a more serious form of care and communication.
