فرمانداری (farmândâri) is a pure Persian compound word denoting the county governor’s office in Iran’s territorial administration. It breaks down as فرمان (farmân, “order” or “command”) plus the suffix -دار (-dâr, “holder”) plus the abstract noun suffix -ی (-i), giving roughly “the institution of holding command.” Iran is divided into provinces (استان, ostân), each subdivided into counties (شهرستان, shahrestân), and each county is administered by a فرماندار (farmândâr), a governor appointed by the Ministry of Interior. The فرمانداری is the office building and administrative body where this governor works. Ordinary citizens go to the فرمانداری for civil registration, electoral matters, and a range of official stamps and permits that sit between municipal and provincial authority.

Iranians are generally familiar with the building because voter registration, some civil documentation, and local administrative appeals all pass through it. The word فرمانداری is also used loosely in conversation to mean any intimidating government office, as in یه کار فرمانداریِ پیچیده (ye kâr-e farmândâri-ye pichide), meaning a convoluted bureaucratic matter.
