What it means

فرهنگ (farhang) is the Persian word for culture, in the full anthropological sense: the shared body of language, art, custom, value, and practice that defines a people. Iranian farhang, Japanese farhang, working-class farhang, internet farhang. The word stretches across all the registers English uses culture for.

It also means dictionary. The same word. A farhang is a reference book that defines words, gives their etymology, illustrates them with quotations. The lexicographer Ali-Akbar Dehkhoda’s monumental لغت‌نامه دهخدا (Loghatname-ye Dehkhoda), the largest Persian dictionary, is a farhang. Mohammad Mo’in’s فرهنگ فارسی (Farhang-e Farsi) is a farhang. The dual sense is not accidental; both meanings descend from the same root idea of learning and refinement.

The two senses, kept apart

Context disambiguates without effort. وزارت فرهنگ (vezarat-e farhang, the Ministry of Culture) is culture; فرهنگ معین (Farhang-e Mo’in) is the dictionary. When the word stands alone, the culture sense is the default; the dictionary sense usually appears in a compound (فرهنگ لغت, farhang-e loghat, or as a book title).

Where it comes from

Pure Persian, attested in Middle Persian (Pahlavi) as frahang, meaning education, learning, instruction. The shift from learning to both culture and dictionary tracks the same idea: the body of what is taught, the record of what is known. The word predates the modern anthropological sense of culture by many centuries; when Persian needed to render the 19th-century European concept of culture, farhang was waiting.
