What it means

انرژی (enerji) means “energy” in both scientific and everyday contexts. It entered Persian from French énergie, which is itself from Greek energeia. The distinctive ژ sound in the middle of the word is a French phonetic fingerprint: Persian inherited it directly from the French pronunciation. In physics, انرژی refers to the capacity to do work. In daily conversation, Iranians use it freely to describe personal vitality, a charged atmosphere, or the fuel supply of a country. A related term is نیرو (niru), a native Persian word that overlaps with energy in the sense of power or force but is used more for mechanical force or strength of a person.

How to use it

  • خورشید منبع اصلی انرژی زمینه. (Khorshid manba’-e asli-ye enerji-ye zamine.) “The sun is the main source of Earth’s energy.”
  • امروز انرژی ندارم، خیلی خسته‌ام. (Emruz enerji nadaram, kheyli khasteam.) “I have no energy today, I’m really tired.”
  • دولت داره روی انرژی خورشیدی سرمایه‌گذاری می‌کنه. (Dowlat dare ru-ye enerji-ye khorshidi sarmayegozari mikone.) “The government is investing in solar energy.”
  • انرژی هسته‌ای موضوع بحث داغیه. (Enerji-ye hasteyi mowzu’-e bahs-e dagiye.) “Nuclear energy is a hot topic of debate.”

Cultural note

Iran’s complex relationship with انرژی runs through its modern history. The country holds among the world’s largest proven reserves of oil and natural gas, and energy policy has shaped Iranian politics, international relations, and daily life for over a century. انرژی هسته‌ای (nuclear energy) in particular became a phrase every Iranian knows through years of international negotiations and domestic debate. At the same time, in informal speech انرژی is used much like the English word in pop culture, describing the vibe of a concert or the mood of a crowd.
