What it means
دیانای (di-en-ey) is the Persian rendering of the English acronym DNA, standing for deoxyribonucleic acid. The term entered Persian directly from English and is used without modification across scientific literature, medical reports, and popular media. It refers to the double-helix molecule found in the nucleus of cells that carries the genetic blueprint of every living organism. In informal speech, Iranians sometimes say ژن (zhen) for gene in related contexts, but دیانای itself is the standard term for the molecule.
How to use it
- آزمایش دیانای نشان داد که او بیگناه است. (âzmâyesh-e di-en-ey neshân dâd ke u bi-gonâh ast.) “The DNA test showed he was innocent.”
- دیانای انسان با شامپانزه خیلی شبیه است. (di-en-ey-e ensân bâ shâmpânze kheyli shabih ast.) “Human DNA is very similar to that of chimpanzees.”
- پزشکها از دیانای برای تشخیص بیماریهای ژنتیکی استفاده میکنند. (pezeshkhâ az di-en-ey barâye tashkhis-e bimârihâye zhenetiki estefâde mikonand.) “Doctors use DNA to diagnose genetic diseases.”
- دیانای او با مظنون مطابقت داشت. (di-en-ey-ye u bâ maznun motâbeqat dâsht.) “His DNA matched the suspect.”
Cultural note
Interest in دیانای has grown significantly in Iran alongside advances in forensic science and genetic medicine. Iranian universities and research centers have published extensively on molecular biology, and the term appears regularly in mainstream news, particularly in crime reporting and public health stories. Genetic ancestry testing has also created wider public familiarity with the word, even among non-specialists.
