دی

دی is a winter word at the bone level. Classical poets paired it with cold, snow, and longing: Saadi and Hafez both use the contrast between دی (the bitter month) and بهار (spring) as a stand-in for hardship and renewal. The first day of دی is also شب چله (shab-e chelle), the longer night-celebration that overlaps with Yalda. Modern Iranians read all of this as one continuous text. The Yazata at the top, the solstice underneath, Saadi in the bookshelf, and now a date that means a protest crackdown.
