What it means

دستگاه چهارگاه (dastgah-e chahargah) is the most dramatic of the seven primary Persian classical modes. The name means “four positions,” from چهار (chahar, four) plus گاه (gah, position), referring to the four characteristic intervals that define its scale. Chahargah is the mode of epic, ceremony, and emotional extremity. It is the one a singer chooses when the poetry calls for fire rather than tears.

Iranian musicians often program Chahargah as the closing dastgah of a long concert because it builds to climactic intensity in a way Shur and Segah do not.

How it sounds

Chahargah uses two koron quarter-tones inside a single octave, more than any other dastgah. The result is a scale that sounds neither minor nor major nor anything in between, but distinctly Iranian and unmistakably theatrical. Western composers who attempted Persianate scoring in the twentieth century usually pulled from Chahargah, because it carries the most recognizable “Persian classical” character.

Its derivatives include حصار (hesar) and مخالف (mokhalef), gushe-ha that climb into the upper register with intensity that, on a strong tar player, can sound almost like a cry.

Cultural weight

Faramarz Payvar, the santur master born in 1933, recorded definitive Chahargah pieces with the small ensemble he led from the 1960s onward. His arrangements are still played at the Tehran Music Conservatory. Among singers, Karim Sasanpur and the older state-radio era voices used Chahargah for shahnameh recitations, where the heroic Shahnameh-e Ferdowsi material demanded a mode that could carry weight without becoming maudlin.

The modern composer Behzad Abdi has set entire operas based on Persian classical poetry in Chahargah, including a 2017 production of the Layli o Majnun story that toured Tehran’s Vahdat Hall. The choice of Chahargah for grand staged work is no accident, it is the dastgah that can fill a hall.
