What it means

دسته بندی (dasteh-bandi) is categorization, classification, the act of sorting things into groups. The pieces are transparent: دسته (dasteh, group, bunch, category) plus بندی (bandi, the act of binding, organizing, fixing in place). Together they name the work of putting items into buckets and labeling each bucket. The word lives in academic Persian, in business reports, in software interfaces, and in any context where things need to be organized into named classes.

Where you meet it

Three settings dominate. Academic and scientific writing: دسته‌بندی گیاهان (dasteh-bandi-ye giyahan, plant classification), دسته‌بندی موضوعی (dasteh-bandi-ye mozui, thematic categorization). Business and bureaucracy: دسته‌بندی مشتریان (dasteh-bandi-ye moshtariyan, customer segmentation), دسته‌بندی محصولات (dasteh-bandi-ye mahsulat, product categorization). User interfaces in Persian apps and websites: filters, tag systems, content categories all show up labeled دسته‌بندی.

The word also works as a verb when you add کردن (kardan, to do): دسته‌بندی کردن (dasteh-bandi kardan, to categorize, to classify). فایل‌ها را دسته‌بندی کن (file-ha ra dasteh-bandi kon) means organize the files into categories.

The bandi suffix

بندی is one of the most productive suffixes in modern Persian. It builds nouns of organization, fixing, scheduling, binding. Some examples you will meet:

• طبقه بندی (tabaqe-bandi), stratification, tiering
• زمان بندی (zaman-bandi), scheduling, timing
• برنامه بندی (barname-bandi), programming, planning
• رتبه بندی (rotbe-bandi), ranking
• تقسیم بندی (taqsim-bandi), division, partitioning

The shape is the same: noun plus -bandi gives you the act of organizing along that axis. If you know the suffix you can decode half the academic vocabulary in modern Persian.

Where it comes from

Both pieces are native Persian. دسته (dasteh) is a very old word for a group, a handle, a bunch, a category, sharing a root with the gesture of grasping a handful. بندی (bandi) is the verbal noun from بستن (bastan, to bind, to tie, to fix), one of the most productive verbs in Persian word formation. The compound is a modern construction, built in the twentieth century as Persian academic and bureaucratic vocabulary expanded to match Western scientific writing. It is now everywhere classification is needed.
