What it means
دسته قابلمه (daste-ye qâblame) means the handle of a cooking pot. دسته (daste) is a pure Persian word meaning handle or grip, used for everything from knife handles to door handles. قابلمه (qâblame) is the standard word for a cooking pot with a lid, borrowed into Persian from Turkish. Together the phrase names the side handle you grip when lifting or moving a hot pot. A close equivalent is دستگیره قابلمه (dastgire-ye qâblame), which is slightly more formal and used in product descriptions, but daste-ye qâblame is the everyday spoken form.
How to use it
- دسته قابلمه داغه، دستت رو نسوزون. (Daste-ye qâblame dâghe, dastat ro nasuzun.) “The pot handle is hot, don’t burn your hand.”
- دسته قابلمه شکسته، باید عوضش کنیم. (Daste-ye qâblame shekaste, bâyad avazash konim.) “The pot handle is broken, we need to replace it.”
- با دو دست دسته قابلمه رو بگیر. (Bâ do dast daste-ye qâblame ro begir.) “Hold the pot handle with both hands.”
- دسته این قابلمه خیلی کوتاهه. (Daste-ye in qâblame kheyli kutâhe.) “The handle on this pot is very short.”
Cultural note
In Iranian kitchens, heavy-bottomed pots are essential for making rice dishes like chelo and polo, where the pot sits on low heat for thirty minutes or more to form the crispy tah-dig. The handle must be heat-resistant and securely riveted because these pots are lifted repeatedly. Older generations often wrapped the handle in cloth or used a folded kitchen towel as a grip, a habit still common in homes today.
