What it means
چون (chon) means “because” and is pure Persian in origin, tracing back through Middle Persian. It is the everyday, neutral-register way to give a reason in Iranian Persian. Its formal written counterpart is زیرا (zirâ), and its colloquial reinforced form is چونکه (chunke). The three words form a diglossic family: all mean the same thing, but each belongs to a different layer of the language. چون is the safest choice for learners because it works in conversation, casual writing, text messages, and standard prose without sounding too stiff or too informal.
How to use it
- نرفتم چون حالم خوب نبود. (Naraftam chon hâlam khub nabud.) “I did not go because I was not feeling well.”
- دیر رسیدم چون ترافیک بود. (Dir residam chon terâfik bud.) “I arrived late because there was traffic.”
- خوشحالم چون امتحانم خوب شد. (Khoshhâlam chon emtehânam khub shod.) “I am happy because my exam went well.”
- این کارو کردم چون فکر میکردم درسته. (In kâro kardam chon fekr mikardam dorste.) “I did this because I thought it was right.”
Cultural note
چون has the distinction of being one of the oldest and most stable words in Persian, present in classical poetry and in the speech of a teenager in Tehran today. In classical literature it could also mean “as” or “like” (a comparative sense), so learners reading Hafez or Rumi may encounter چون meaning “as beautiful as” rather than “because.” In modern everyday speech the causal meaning is dominant and the comparative sense has largely retreated to literary contexts. Paired awareness of چون and زیرا is essential for navigating Persian across formal and informal situations.
