چنین

What it means

چنین (chenin) means such, like this, or of this kind. It is a pure Persian demonstrative adverb formed by contraction of چون (chun/chon, “like, as”) and این (in, “this”) — چون این (chon in) contracted to چنین (chenin) — the same pattern seen in چنان (chenân, such as that, like that, in that way), which contracts چون (chun) with آن (ân, “that”). The distinction between the two is directional in the same way English this/that works: chenin points to something present or just mentioned, while chenân points to something distant or hypothetical. So «چنین کسی» (chenin kasi) means such a person as this one under discussion, and «چنان کسی» (chenân kasi) means such a person as that one, more remote. In colloquial speech chenin also appears in the emphatic compound هیچ‌چنین (hich-chenin), meaning absolutely not, not in the least like this, a strong denial. The negative construction «چنین نبود» (chenin nabud, it was not like this) appears often in literary and formal speech to correct a mischaracterization.

How to use it

• چنین آدمی رو هیچ‌وقت ندیدم (chenin âdami ro hich-vaght nadidim) “I have never seen such a person.”
• چنین نبود که فکر می‌کردی (chenin nabud ke fekr mikardi) “It was not like what you were thinking.”
• هیچ‌چنین نگو (hich-chenin nagu) “Don’t say such a thing at all.”
• چرا چنین کاری کردی؟ (cherâ chenin kâri kardi?) “Why did you do such a thing?”

Cultural note

The word is deeply embedded in classical Persian literature. The opening lines of Sa’di’s Golestan and Hafez’s ghazals make frequent use of chenin and chenân to draw the reader into a comparison or moral observation. Hearing the word in modern speech often carries a mild literary register, lending a phrase a slightly elevated or rhetorical tone even in casual conversation.
