What it means
بازنشسته (bâzneshaste) means retired or, as a noun, retiree. It is a purely Persian word formed from the prefix باز (back, away) combined with نشسته, the past participle of نشستن (to sit). The literal sense is someone who has sat back, stepped back from work. It functions both as an adjective (a retired teacher) and as a noun (a retiree). The noun form بازنشستگی (bâzneshastegi) refers to the state or process of retirement, while بازنشسته describes the person who has retired.
How to use it
- پدرم بازنشستهست. (pedaram bâzneshaste-st.) “My father is retired.”
- اون یه معلم بازنشستهست. (un ye moalem-e bâzneshaste-st.) “She is a retired teacher.”
- بازنشستهها جمع شدن تا اعتراض کنن. (bâzneshaste-hâ jam’ shodan tâ e’terâz konan.) “The retirees gathered to protest.”
- کی بازنشسته میشی؟ (ki bâzneshaste mishi?) “When will you retire?”
Cultural note
The standard retirement age in Iran is 60 for men and 55 for women in the private sector, though it varies by sector and pension fund. Government employees often retire after 30 years of qualifying service regardless of age. The word بازنشسته is used in both formal correspondence and casual conversation, and carries no particular stigma: it simply marks a change of status rather than any judgment about age or capacity.
