What it means
بازی دستهجمعی (bâzi-ye daste-jame’i) describes any game or play activity done collectively, whether a board game night, a team sport, a party game, or a traditional group game played in the street or at a gathering. The phrase has three parts: بازی (bâzi, game or play) is pure Persian; دسته (daste, group or bunch) is also native Persian; and جمعی (jame’i, collective or communal) comes from the Arabic root جمع (jam’, gathering or collection). The compound feels natural in spoken Persian and is used at all registers. A shorter synonym in casual speech is بازی گروهی (bâzi-ye gruhi, group game).
How to use it
- بازی دستهجمعی بریم؟ (bâzi-ye daste-jame’i berim?) “Shall we play a group game?”
- بازی دستهجمعی برای بچهها خیلی مفیده. (bâzi-ye daste-jame’i barâ-ye bacheh-hâ kheyli mofide.) “Group play is very beneficial for children.”

Cultural note
Group games hold a central place in Iranian social life, especially during Nowruz celebrations, family gatherings, and school recess. Traditional بازیهای دستهجمعی such as قایمموشک (hide-and-seek) and اتلمتل (a counting rhyme game) have been played across generations in Iranian neighborhoods. In recent years, board game cafes in Tehran and other cities have revived interest in structured group play among young adults, giving the phrase a modern context beyond childhood.
