What it means
باشگاه بدنسازی (bâshgâh-e badan-sâzi) means a gym or bodybuilding and fitness club. The compound has mixed origins: badan (بدن), meaning body, is Arabic, and sâzi, from the Persian verb sâkhtan (to build or make), is native Persian, making badan-sâzi a cross-origin compound meaning body-building. Bâshgâh means club or association. Together the phrase describes any facility with weights and exercise equipment. In casual speech Iranians often shorten it to bâshgâh or simply jim (from English gym), both of which are widely understood.
How to use it
- میری باشگاه بدنسازی؟ (Miri bâshgâh-e badan-sâzi?) “Are you going to the gym?”
- یه باشگاه خوب نزدیک خونمونه. (Ye bâshgâh-e khub nazdik-e khunemune.) “There’s a good gym near our house.”
- عضو یه باشگاه بدنسازی شدم. (Ozv-e ye bâshgâh-e badan-sâzi shodam.) “I joined a gym.”
- باشگاه بدنسازی صبحها شلوغه. (Bâshgâh-e badan-sâzi sobh-â sheluqe.) “The gym is crowded in the mornings.”
Cultural note
Gym culture in Iran grew rapidly from the 1990s onward, and today Tehran and other major cities have thousands of registered bâshgâh-e badan-sâzi facilities. Bodybuilding (badan-sâzi) has a competitive scene with national federations and international participants. Women-only gyms are widespread and socially accepted, offering aerobics, yoga, and weight training. Membership fees are a common topic of everyday financial conversation, with many families treating a bâshgâh subscription as a standard monthly expense.
