Banafsh sits in a neutral cultural space. Unlike سیاه (mourning) or سبز (Islam, paradise, environment), purple does not carry a heavy symbolic charge in Iranian culture. It reads simply as a color. In Persian classical color schemes for textiles and Persian carpets, banafsh shows up as a high-status dye because the natural source (made from لاک, lak, an insect resin imported from India) was historically expensive.
