What it means
بافنده (bafande) is the Persian word for weaver. Anyone who weaves, whether the rug, the kilim, the fabric, the basket, the silk. The word is the active participle of بافتن (baftan, to weave), built with the productive ـنده (-andeh) suffix that turns a verb into the agent who does it. خواننده (khanandeh) is reader from khandan, نویسنده (nevisandeh) is writer from neveshtan, and bafande is weaver from baftan. Same pattern across Persian.
In modern usage, bafande most often points at the rug weaver. The Persian carpet industry, the قالیبافی (qali-bafi) tradition, employs hundreds of thousands of bafande across Iran, mostly women working in villages and small workshops. A single fine Tabrizi or Naini رفع (qali) can take a bafande or a team of them many months to finish.
How to use it
You use bafande to name the maker, to credit the labor, to specify the trade. Carpet dealers cite the bafande’s village and tribe when selling a high-end piece because origin and the weaver’s hand affect value.

Where it comes from
بافتن (baftan) is one of the deepest Persian verbs, traced through Middle Persian bāftan back to Proto-Iranian roots tied to weaving and braiding. The verb cluster spawned a whole vocabulary: بافت (baft, weave, texture, tissue, used in modern biology too), بافنده (bafande, weaver), بافتنی (baftani, knitted thing), قالیبافی (qali-bafi, rug weaving). The carpet industry kept these words alive and central even as other crafts faded.

Every Persian rug on a Western floor began with a bafande’s hands, usually a woman, usually paid badly relative to the piece’s final price. When you learn the word bafande, you learn to look at the back of a rug, count the knots per square inch, and ask who made it.
