What it means
استرالیا (Ostorâliâ) is the Persian name for Australia, the country and continent that occupies most of the southern Pacific and Indian Ocean region. The name comes into Persian directly from the English word “Australia,” which in turn derives from New Latin “Terra Australis,” meaning “southern land.” There is no native Persian equivalent, so the word is used unchanged across all registers. Australians are called استرالیایی (ostorâliâyi) in Persian, and the same form works as an adjective: موسیقی استرالیایی (musighi-ye ostorâliâyi) means “Australian music.”

Cultural note
Australia has a notable Iranian diaspora, with a significant community concentrated in Sydney and Melbourne. Many Iranians who emigrated after the 1979 revolution, or during the visa programs of the 1990s and 2000s, settled there. The country is commonly associated in Persian conversation with kangaroos (کانگورو, kângoroo) and with its reputation as a destination for higher education and permanent residency.
