What it means
اطلسی (atlasi) is the Persian word for petunia, a common garden flower with smooth, trumpet-shaped blooms. The name is a compound of اطلس (atlas), meaning satin fabric, which Persian borrowed from Arabic, and the Persian adjectival suffix -i, so atlasi literally means satin-like or of satin quality. The Arabic root ط-ل-س carries the sense of smoothness, which suits the lustrous, prized satin fabric the word originally named. The word is therefore mixed in origin: Arabic root plus Persian suffix. Petunias are not native to Iran and arrived as ornamental garden plants in the modern era.
How to use it
- گلدون پر از اطلسیهای بنفشی گذاشتم تو بالکن. (goldun por az atlâsi-hâye banafshi gozâshtam tu bâlkon.) “I placed a pot full of purple petunias on the balcony.”
- اطلسیها رنگهای خیلی قشنگ دارن. (atlâsi-hâ rang-hâye kheyli qashangi dâran.) “Petunias come in very beautiful colors.”
- این گل اطلسی نیاز به آفتاب زیاد داره. (in gol-e atlâsi niyâz be âftâb-e ziâd dâre.) “This petunia needs a lot of sunlight.”
- باغچهمونو با اطلسی و گل میمون پر کردیم. (bâghchemon ro bâ atlâsi o gol-e mimun por kardim.) “We filled our garden bed with petunias and snapdragons.”
Cultural note
Petunias are a modern garden ornamental in Iran, planted widely in urban flowerbeds, balcony pots, and parks. They do not carry the classical poetic symbolism of older Persian flowers like the rose or the tulip. The name اطلسی reflects how Iranians named new imported plants by analogy with familiar textures: the flower’s smooth, almost silky petals reminded speakers of اطلس, the prized satin fabric traded on ancient routes through Persia.
