What it means

آسم (âsm) means asthma, the chronic respiratory condition in which the airways narrow and swell, causing difficulty breathing, wheezing, and coughing. The word was borrowed directly from French asthme, which itself derives from the Greek “asthma” (meaning labored breathing, from “azein,” to pant). It entered Persian through modern medical vocabulary in the same way as میگرن and کلسترول, as part of the 20th-century adoption of European medical terminology, not through the classical Arabic medical tradition. In formal clinical writing you may occasionally see آسم برونشیال (âsm-e bronshiyâl, bronchial asthma), but آسم alone is the universal everyday term.

How to use it

  • از بچگی آسم دارم. (Az bachegi âsm dâram.) “I have had asthma since childhood.”
  • هوای آلوده حملات آسم رو بیشتر می‌کنه. (Havâ-ye âlude hamelât-e âsm ro bishtar mikone.) “Polluted air increases asthma attacks.”
  • اسپری آسمم رو جا گذاشتم. (Espriy-e âsm-am ro jâ gozâshtam.) “I left my asthma inhaler behind.”
  • بهار که میشه آسمم بدتر میشه. (Bahâr ke mishe âsm-am badtar mishe.) “When spring comes my asthma gets worse.”

Cultural note

Asthma rates in Iranian cities, particularly Tehran, are aggravated by chronic air pollution, and آسم is a commonly discussed health concern in urban households. The word اسپری (espriy, inhaler spray) is widely known and pharmacies stock both corticosteroid inhalers and short-acting bronchodilators without a prescription in many cases. Traditional herbal remedies such as thyme steam inhalation are still used alongside prescribed inhalers, particularly in older generations.
