What it means
آنستزی (anestezi) is the loanword used in Iranian clinical and hospital settings to mean anaesthesia. It comes from the Greek ἀναισθησία (anaisthesia), composed of ἀν (an, without) and αἴσθησις (aisthesis, sensation). The word entered Persian through European medical terminology, most likely via French and English, during the modernisation of Iranian medicine in the twentieth century. In practice, آنستزی is the term medical staff use when talking to each other, on anaesthetic charts, and in pharmacological contexts. When speaking to patients, doctors and nurses typically switch to the native Persian word بیهوشی (bihoushi), which conveys the same meaning in a more accessible register.

Iran has a formal medical specialisation called متخصص بیهوشی یا آنستزیولوژی (anaesthesiology), and graduates of this field use آنستزی and its derivatives in their professional vocabulary every day. The coexistence of آنستزی and بیهوشی illustrates a broader pattern in Iranian medicine, where European loanwords circulate within hospitals while older Persian vocabulary remains standard in public health education. Iranian medical schools teach both terms, and students are expected to know when each register is appropriate.
