What it means

اصل (asl) means the origin, root, or core principle of something, and by extension “the real, genuine article” as opposed to a copy or a knockoff. It’s an Arabic loanword, borrowed along with a whole family of related words like اصالت (asâlat, authenticity) and اصلی (asli, original/authentic). A close contrast is فرع (far’, a branch or secondary matter), the classic Arabic-derived pairing of “root versus branch” that shows up in formal Persian writing and speech alike.

How to use it

  • در اصل همینطوریه (dar asl hamintorie) “in essence, that’s just how it is”
  • این اصلِ جنسه (in asl-e jense) “this is the real deal, not a fake”
  • اصلش کجاست؟ (aslesh kojâst?) “where does this originally come from?”
  • اصالتش مهمه (asâlatesh mohemme) “its authenticity matters”

Cultural note

Asl and its derivative asâlat carry real weight in Iranian daily life, especially around goods and food, where shoppers routinely ask if something is asl (genuine) rather than a cheap copy, from pistachios to leather to perfume. The root also structures a lot of formal reasoning in Persian, appearing in legal, religious, and academic writing wherever a discussion moves from the underlying principle (asl) to secondary details. Because of that range, the word slides easily between a market haggle and a philosophy lecture.
