What it means
آشنا (âshnâ) means familiar, known, or acquainted. It functions as both an adjective and a noun in Persian: as an adjective it describes a state of familiarity («این جا برام آشناست», this place feels familiar to me), and as a noun it means an acquaintance or someone you know («یه آشنا دیدم», I ran into someone I know). The word is pure Persian and carries warmth; calling someone آشنا implies a bond, however slight, that distinguishes them from a stranger (غریبه, gharibe). The compound آشنا شدن (âshnâ shodan) means to get acquainted with someone or to become familiar with something, for example a new city or a skill. A near synonym is آگاه (âgâh), but that word leans toward awareness and knowledge rather than personal familiarity, and it belongs to a more formal register.
How to use it
- با این کار آشنایی؟ (bâ in kâr âshnâyi?) “Are you familiar with this work?”
- اون رو میشناسم، یه آشناست (un ro mishnâsam, ye âshnâst) “I know him, he’s an acquaintance.”
- به تهران آشنا نیستم (be Tehrân âshnâ nistam) “I’m not familiar with Tehran.”
- میخوام با فرهنگ ایران آشنا بشم (mikhâm bâ farhang-e Irân âshnâ besham) “I want to get acquainted with Iranian culture.”
Cultural note
In Iranian social life, the distinction between a complete stranger and an آشنا matters enormously. Iranians are widely known for hospitality toward strangers, but having even a loose آشنایی (acquaintanceship) connection unlocks a warmer, more committed level of help. Phrases like «یه آشنا داری اونجا؟» (do you have anyone you know there?) are the practical starting point for navigating everything from hospital bureaucracy to finding an apartment, because having an آشنا inside a system is understood to smooth things considerably.
