What it means
ابریشم (abresham) means silk, the fine natural fiber produced by silkworm larvae. The word is ancient Persian, attested in Middle Persian (Pahlavi) as abrêšom, and has cognates in other Iranian languages. It is among the oldest fabric terms in the Persian lexicon. The adjective form is ابریشمی (abreshami), meaning silken or made of silk. Historically, silk was so strongly associated with Iran along the Silk Road that the Persian word for it spread into neighboring languages and cultures.
How to use it
- این شال از ابریشم خالصه. (in shâl az abresham-e khâles-e.) “This shawl is made of pure silk.”
- ابریشم ایرانی معروفه. (abresham-e irâni ma’rufe.) “Iranian silk is famous.”
- قیمت ابریشم بالاست. (gheymat-e abresham bâlâst.) “The price of silk is high.”
- مامانم یه پارچه ابریشم از یزد خریده. (mâmanam ye pârche abresham az Yazd kharide.) “My mom bought a piece of silk from Yazd.”
Cultural note
Iran played a central role in the ancient Silk Road trade network, both as a producer and as a transit hub for silk moving between China and the Mediterranean world. Cities such as Yazd, Kashan, and Gilan have produced high-quality silk for centuries. In classical Persian poetry, ابریشم is a recurring image of smoothness, delicacy, and beauty, used to describe fine hair, a gentle voice, or soft skin. Today, hand-woven Iranian silk textiles remain a prestigious craft export and a source of national cultural pride.
