How Verbling Works for Farsi

Verbling is a tutoring platform where every tutor has a video introduction. You watch a 1-2 minute clip before booking, which gives you a feel for their personality, accent, and teaching style. The Persian tutor pool is in the hundreds, mostly native Iranian speakers. Lessons use Verbling's built-in video tool with a shared whiteboard and notes feature.

My 3 Trial Lessons

Lesson 1 ($12/hr): A young Tehrani teacher doing lessons from his apartment. Energy was great, corrections were frequent and helpful, and the conversational approach kept things moving. Solid value at the price.

Lesson 2 ($25/hr): An experienced teacher with a structured curriculum. She had a Google Doc with the lesson plan, vocabulary list, and homework. The organization was impressive. The ezafe and compound verb exercises were tailored to my weak points.

Lesson 3 ($40/hr): An ACTFL-certified instructor. The most professional experience but honestly not twice as good as the $25 tutor. Excellent for test prep or academic goals. Overkill for conversational learning.

Platform Pros

Video introductions are genius. Seeing a tutor speak for 90 seconds tells you more than any written bio. The in-platform tools (whiteboard, shared notes, chat) are better than competitors who rely on Zoom or Skype. The scheduling system handles timezone conversion cleanly.

Platform Cons

Verbling's commission makes tutors price higher than on italki, where the same person might charge less. The platform has been experiencing reduced growth and some tutors are migrating to Preply. Customer support for disputes is slow.

The Verdict

Verbling sits between italki and Preply in terms of polish and pricing. The video profiles are the standout feature. If you've been burned by tutors who looked great on paper but didn't click in person, Verbling reduces that risk. The mid-range tutors ($20-30) offer the best balance of quality and price.
