What the Course Covers

Live Lingua hosts free digitized versions of the Foreign Service Institute (FSI) Persian courses. These are the same courses the US State Department used to train diplomats from the 1960s-80s. The materials include audio recordings and textbook PDFs covering pronunciation, grammar, and conversation.

The Instructor

Original FSI instructors and native speakers from decades ago. The teaching methodology follows the audio-lingual method: listen, repeat, drill patterns until automatic. It was state-of-the-art in 1965.

What Works

The audio drills are surprisingly effective for building pronunciation habits. The FSI method's relentless repetition works for learners who respond to pattern drilling. The materials are thorough and professionally produced (by government standards). And they're completely free.

The diplomatic vocabulary has niche value. If you need formal, polished Persian for professional settings, these courses teach a register that modern apps ignore entirely.

What Doesn't Work

The Persian taught is dated. Some vocabulary and expressions haven't been commonly used since before the 1979 revolution. The formal register is so formal it sounds stiff even by Iranian standards. Social contexts have changed dramatically since these courses were created.

The audio quality reflects its era. Recordings can be scratchy and hard to follow. The methodology is repetitive to the point of tedium. Modern learners accustomed to interactive, gamified learning will struggle to stay engaged with "repeat after me" drills for 45 minutes.

Who This Course Is For

Audio-focused learners who don't mind dated materials. Language learning historians. People with zero budget who want structured audio drills. Not for anyone who wants modern, natural Persian.

The Verdict

Live Lingua's FSI courses are a historical curiosity with limited practical value. The pronunciation drills still work for building sound awareness, but the vocabulary, social context, and methodology are all showing their age. Use them for free pronunciation practice if nothing else works with your schedule. Don't use them as your primary learning resource.

For modern Persian learning with current vocabulary, ZabanYar uses today's language, not 1965's.
