What Is the Steingass Dictionary?

Francis Joseph Steingass compiled his "Comprehensive Persian-English Dictionary" in 1892. The University of Chicago now hosts it as a free, searchable online resource. It covers classical, literary, and formal Persian with etymological notes, Arabic-origin vocabulary, and archaic forms that modern dictionaries skip.

What Works

For academic purposes, nothing in English comes close. If you're reading Hafez, Rumi, or Ferdowsi and encounter a word that doesn't appear in modern dictionaries, Steingass probably has it. The etymological notes trace words back to Arabic, Turkish, and Sanskrit origins, which illuminates how Persian absorbed vocabulary over centuries.

Free access to an academic-quality historical dictionary is remarkable. This would normally live in university library reference sections. The UChicago digitization makes it available to anyone with internet.

Where It Falls Short

The dictionary is 130+ years old. Modern vocabulary doesn't exist. Colloquial forms are absent. The definitions themselves are written in Victorian English, which adds a second layer of translation difficulty. You're reading 1892 English explanations of 19th-century Persian.

The online search interface is functional but basic. No audio, no example sentences in context, no cross-references to modern usage. This is a historical document digitized, not a modern learning tool.
