This solves PersianPod101’s biggest problem (overwhelming choice) and turns the platform from a buffet into a curriculum. The path for Absolute Beginner → Intermediate is well-designed and takes about 3-4 months at one lesson per day.
Where It Falls Short
The Free Tier Is Useless
Free access gives you a few sample lessons and locks everything else. The app constantly pushes “upgrade to Premium” pop-ups. The email marketing starts immediately after registration and does not stop. I received 47 emails in the first month, including fake “last chance” sales every week. The free tier exists to convert you to paid, not to teach you Persian.
The Formal/Colloquial Split Is Inconsistent
Some lessons teach spoken Tehrani forms. Others teach formal written Persian. There’s no consistent labeling. you won’t know which register you’re learning until you hear the dialogue. In one lesson, the speakers used mikhām beram; two lessons later, the same phrase was mikhāham beravam. No explanation of why both exist or when to use which.
Compare this to Chai and Conversation, which explicitly and consistently teaches colloquial Tehrani and explains the formal/informal distinction. PersianPod101 seems unaware that the distinction matters.
Premium+ “Personal Teacher” Is Disappointing
At $47/month, Premium+ promises a personal teacher who provides feedback. In practice, this means you submit written assignments and receive corrections within 24-48 hours. There are no live sessions, no conversation practice, no real-time pronunciation feedback. For $47/month, you could book two sessions with an italki tutor who actually talks to you.
The Content Library Has Gaps
Despite the volume, some important topics are missing or underdeveloped. The grammar progression is inconsistent. you’ll encounter compound verbs in an intermediate lesson but never find a dedicated lesson explaining how they work. Ta’arof gets a surface-level episode but not the deep cultural treatment it deserves. The Advanced tier is thin compared to Beginner, suggesting the content team focused on acquisition rather than retention.
Best Episodes to Try First
Absolute Beginner Lesson 1: Self-introduction in Farsi. Clear, well-paced, good first impression of the format.
Beginner Season 1, Lesson 5: Ordering at a restaurant. Practical vocabulary, natural dialogue, useful phrases you’ll actually use.
Intermediate Lesson 12: Discussing weather and seasons. Good test of whether the intermediate level matches your actual level.
Culture Class: Iranian New Year (Nowruz): One of the few culture episodes that goes beyond surface level. Worth it even if you don’t subscribe.
