What the Course Covers

Berlitz is a 145-year-old language school offering Persian/Farsi instruction through their global network. Courses include private lessons (online or in-person), group classes, and self-study materials. Berlitz uses their proprietary immersive method: instruction happens in the target language from lesson one.

The Instructor

Berlitz instructors are trained in the Berlitz Method and are native or near-native speakers. Quality control exists but varies by location and instructor. You're paying for the methodology and brand, not a specific teacher.

What Works

The immersive method is effective for building confidence. Being forced to speak Persian from the first lesson accelerates the speaking-listening loop that self-study resources can't replicate. The live instruction provides real-time feedback on pronunciation, which is worth more than any app for sound production.

For corporate or professional learners with employer-funded training budgets, Berlitz's brand recognition and structured reporting make it easy to justify to HR departments.

What Doesn't Work

The price is staggering for individual learners. At $40-80 per lesson, a 20-lesson course runs $800-1600. That's italki tutor territory times five, and independent Farsi tutors on italki or Preply charge $15-30 for the same hour of live instruction.

Berlitz teaches 30+ languages with the same method. Persian gets the same treatment as Spanish or French, which means Persian-specific challenges (script, diglossia, Tarof) don't get specialized attention. The method is language-agnostic, and that shows.

Who This Course Is For

Corporate learners with company-funded language training. People who need the structure and accountability of scheduled live lessons. Learners who've failed at self-study and need human instruction. Not for budget-conscious individuals.

The Verdict

Berlitz is a Rolls-Royce when a Toyota gets you to the same destination. The live instruction and immersive method work, but you're paying a massive premium for the brand name. Unless your employer is footing the bill, you can get comparable live Persian instruction at a fraction of the cost through italki, Preply, or independent tutors.

For self-paced learning between tutor sessions, ZabanYar is free and focuses specifically on Persian.

Full disclosure. ZabanYar is my own app. I built it, so treat any recommendation of it on this page as an interested one rather than an independent verdict. Everything else here is my honest read, and you are welcome to check it against someone else's.

How much does Berlitz Farsi cost?

Private lessons typically run $40-80 per session depending on location and package. Group classes are cheaper per session. Total course costs range from $800-3000+ depending on the program.

Is Berlitz good for learning Farsi?

The immersive method works for building speaking confidence. But Berlitz doesn't specialize in Persian, so you miss Persian-specific features like script instruction and diglossia awareness. The quality depends heavily on your specific instructor.

Does Berlitz offer online Farsi lessons?

Yes. Berlitz offers online private lessons and virtual group classes for Farsi. The online format follows the same immersive methodology as in-person instruction.

Is Berlitz worth it compared to italki for Farsi?

For most individual learners, no. italki tutors charge $15-30/hr for comparable live instruction. Berlitz adds brand recognition and standardized methodology, but the price premium is hard to justify for Farsi specifically.

What is the Berlitz Method?

An immersive approach where instruction happens in the target language from the first lesson. The instructor uses the language naturally, and you learn through context and repetition rather than translation.
◆ Try it — the way I’d run it in a lesson
Role-play: the taxi.

I play the driver, you play yourself. I’ll wave you off — قابل نداره. Your job is not to believe me. Insist, twice, with a smile:

خواهش می‌کنم، بفرماییدkhâhesh mikonam, befarmâyid“please, I insist”
نه، اینطوری نمی‌شهna, intori nemishe“no, this won’t do”
We run it three times, then swap roles. By lesson’s end you’ll taarof without thinking — slang, tone, and all.

Get it wrong and the worst that happens is a warm laugh and a story they’ll tell for years. Get it right — refuse the tea twice, accept on the third — and you’ll watch a face open up. You didn’t just speak Persian. You played the game.
