The first time you try to read Persian, your eyes betray you. You start on the left. where English trained you to start. and have to consciously drag your gaze to the right side of the line. It feels wrong. Your eyes keep jumping back to the left. You lose your place. A three-word phrase takes ten seconds to decode.
This isn’t a failure of willpower or practice. It’s your visual cortex fighting against twenty-plus years of left-to-right training. Learning to read Persian script isn’t just “memorizing new letters.” It’s asking your brain to reverse one of its most deeply ingrained habits. the direction it processes written language. And the neuroscience of how that happens is fascinating, largely unstudied for Persian specifically, and full of practical implications for how you should structure your learning.
How Your Brain Reads: The Visual Word Form Area
Reading is not natural. Humans evolved language for speech, not text. Writing was invented about 5,000 years ago. too recent for evolution to have created dedicated neural hardware for it. Instead, reading hijacks existing brain structures.
The key structure is the Visual Word Form Area (VWFA), located in the left fusiform gyrus. Neuroscientist Stanislas Dehaene calls this region “the brain’s letterbox”. it becomes specialized for recognizing written symbols through years of practice. fMRI studies show that the VWFA activates specifically for written words, not other visual stimuli. It’s not born specialized. it becomes specialized through reading experience.
Here’s what matters for Persian learners: the VWFA adapts to the script you learned first. If you grew up reading English, your VWFA is optimized for Latin letter recognition, left-to-right scanning, and the specific visual features that distinguish Latin letters (ascenders, descenders, curves, angles). When you start learning Persian script, you’re asking the VWFA to add a second, very different pattern recognition system alongside the first.
What Changes When You Learn RTL
Eye Movement Reversal
Eye-tracking studies show that reading direction is deeply habitual. English readers make saccades (rapid eye jumps) from left to right, with occasional regressions (backward jumps) to re-read unclear passages. Arabic and Persian readers do the opposite. saccades move right to left, with regressions going left to right.
When an English reader starts learning Persian, their eye movements are initially chaotic. Studies on Arabic script learners (similar to Persian in reading direction) show that beginners frequently make “wrong-direction” saccades. their eyes jump left when they should jump right. This decreases with practice but takes weeks to months to stabilize, even with daily reading.
The practical implication: reading direction should be practiced as a separate skill from letter recognition. If you try to learn individual letters AND reverse your reading direction simultaneously, both skills suffer because they’re competing for the same cognitive resources. Better approach: first, learn to recognize letters in isolation (no direction involved). Then, practice reading direction with known letters in simple words. Layer the skills sequentially, not simultaneously.
Visual Processing Asymmetry
Your brain processes the two visual fields differently. For experienced LTR readers, the right visual field (left hemisphere) is more efficient at processing text. because that’s where upcoming text appears during left-to-right reading. For RTL readers, the left visual field (right hemisphere) becomes more efficient.
Bilingual readers who use both LTR and RTL scripts show evidence of flexible visual processing. their brains can shift the attentional bias depending on which script they’re reading. But this flexibility develops slowly. Early in the learning process, you’ll notice that you “see” Persian text better when it’s in the left part of your visual field, because that’s where your English-trained brain expects the next word to appear.
Letter Shape Processing
Persian’s dot-based system is actually a memory advantage once you know the trick. the mnemonics guide shows how to use shape families and dot patterns to memorize all 32 letters faster than rote repetition.
Latin letters are distinguished primarily by their overall shape: b vs. d, p vs. q (mirror images), m vs. n (similar but different heights). Your VWFA has spent years learning these distinctions.
Persian letters are distinguished differently: many share base shapes and are differentiated only by dots (as covered in the mnemonics guide). Additionally, Persian letters change shape based on position. the same letter looks different at the beginning, middle, and end of a word. This means your visual system needs to learn a new type of pattern recognition: “ignore the overall shape variations, focus on the dot pattern and context.”
Neuroimaging studies show that learning a second writing system activates the VWFA but also recruits additional brain regions. particularly areas involved in visual attention and working memory. Your brain is working harder, recruiting extra resources, because the existing VWFA specialization for Latin isn’t sufficient for Persian.
The “My Eyes Keep Jumping” Problem
Nearly every Persian learner reports this experience: when reading Persian, their eyes involuntarily jump to the wrong position. Specifically:
- Starting to read from the left side instead of the right
- After finishing a line, jumping to the left of the next line instead of the right
- When encountering numbers (which run left-to-right even in Persian text), losing their place entirely
- When reading mixed-script text (Persian with English words), experiencing directional confusion
This is called directional interference, and it’s a well-documented phenomenon in script-acquisition research. It’s not a sign of difficulty or low aptitude. it’s a predictable consequence of your brain’s existing LTR programming conflicting with new RTL demands.
How to manage it:
Use a finger or pointer. Physical tracking forces your eyes to follow the correct direction. It feels childish. It works. Use it for the first few weeks until rightward scanning begins to automate.
Practice with single words before sentences. A single word doesn’t have a “direction”. it’s just a shape. Start with word-level recognition, then build to phrases, then sentences. Don’t jump to full paragraphs before your eye movements are stable.
Avoid mixing scripts in one session. Reading English text immediately before or after Persian text increases directional interference. If possible, create dedicated “Persian reading” time where you don’t switch between scripts. The interference effect decreases as your RTL reading fluency improves, but early on, the switching cost is significant.
Read in short bursts. Directional control is effortful and fatigues quickly for beginners. Five minutes of focused Persian reading is better than twenty minutes of frustrated eye-jumping. Increase duration as the skill develops.
Why Reading Direction Should Be Practiced Separately
Most alphabet courses teach letter recognition and reading simultaneously. You learn the letter ب, then immediately try to read it in a word. This seems efficient but creates a dual-task problem: your brain is simultaneously trying to recognize a new letter AND scan in an unfamiliar direction.
Cognitive load theory (Sweller, 1988) predicts that combining two novel tasks reduces performance on both. The evidence supports this for script learning: studies on Arabic script acquisition show that separating letter recognition from connected reading produces faster progress than combining them.
Recommended sequence:
- Phase 1. Letter recognition (no direction): Learn to identify all 32 letters in isolation. Use flashcards, mnemonics, quizzes. No connected text yet.
- Phase 2. Simple words (short RTL sequences): Read 2-4 letter words. Practice right-to-left scanning on short sequences where the cognitive load is low.
- Phase 3. Phrases and short sentences: Extend to phrases. Use a finger tracker. Practice line returns (right side of next line).
- Phase 4. Paragraphs and extended text: Read longer passages. Eye movements are now semi-automatic. Focus shifts from direction to comprehension.

Practical Training Protocol
Based on the neuroscience, here’s an optimized approach for English speakers learning to read Persian:
Week 1-2: Letter recognition only. Visual mnemonics for each letter. Quiz yourself on isolated letters. No connected text.
Week 2-3: Simple word reading. 2-4 letter words with known letters. Use finger tracking. 5-10 minutes per session, no more. Read the same words multiple times. the repetition builds RTL scanning fluency on familiar material.
Week 3-4: Short phrases and sentences. Simple structures with known vocabulary. Practice line returns. Begin reading Persian signs, labels, and short social media posts.
Week 4+: Extended reading. Gradually increase text length and complexity. Decrease reliance on finger tracking as eye movements automate. Continue SRS practice on vocabulary in parallel.
