What it means

یاس (yas) refers to jasmine, a small white or pale-yellow flower prized for its intense fragrance. The full classical form is یاسمن or یاسمین (yasamin), which most scholars trace to Old Iranian or early Middle Persian, from where it passed into Arabic as ياسمين and then into many other languages. The shortened یاس is the common spoken Persian form. Note that یاس has a homonym: یاس also means despair or hopelessness in Persian, a completely separate word borrowed from Arabic (ياس). Context always makes the meaning clear. A close synonym in the fragrant-flower sense is نرگس (narges, narcissus).

How to use it

  • بوی یاس تو هواست. (bu-ye yas tu-ye havast.) “The scent of jasmine is in the air.”
  • یه بوته یاس کاشتیم دم در. (ye bute-ye yas kashtim dam-e dar.) “We planted a jasmine bush by the door.”
  • دوست دارم از یاس عطر درست کنم. (dust daram az yas atr dorost konam.) “I want to make perfume from jasmine.”
  • گل‌های یاس ریختن رو زمین. (gol-haye yas rikhtan ru-ye zamin.) “The jasmine flowers have fallen to the ground.”

Cultural note

Jasmine holds a cherished place in Persian poetry and daily life. Classical poets such as Hafez and Saadi frequently contrast the delicate scent of یاس with the rose, pairing the two as symbols of beauty and love. In modern Iran, jasmine bushes are common in courtyards and gardens, and jasmine tea (چای یاس) is a popular drink sold in tea houses. The name یاسمین is also a widely used Persian female given name, keeping the flower’s identity alive in everyday culture.
