What it means

یخچال (yakh-châl) means “refrigerator.” Native Persian compound from یخ (yakh) “ice” + چال (châl) “pit, hole,” literally “ice pit.” Originally referred to the traditional below-ground ice storage built across Persia for centuries; now means the modern fridge.
