What it means
واگن (vâgon) means a train carriage, a single car of a passenger or freight train. The word comes directly from French wagon, and entered Persian along with the introduction of rail travel in the late nineteenth century. In spoken Persian, واگن refers to any individual car of a train, whether a passenger coach, a sleeper car, or a freight wagon. A close related term is کوپه (kupe, also from French), which refers specifically to the compartment inside a passenger carriage.
How to use it
(vâgon-e avval kheyli sholuge.) “The first carriage is very crowded.”
(jâmun tu vâgon-e shomâre panje.) “Our place is in carriage number five.”
(vâgon-hây-e in qatâr qadimie.) “The carriages of this train are old.”
(vâgon-e resturân kojâst?) “Where is the dining car?”
Cultural note
(Râh-âhan-e Jomhuri-ye Eslâmi-ye Irân), operates an extensive network connecting Tehran to major cities including Isfahan, Mashhad, Shiraz, and Tabriz. Overnight sleeper trains with dedicated واگنهای خوابگاهی (sleeping carriages) are a popular and affordable way to travel between cities. The term واگن is also used in metro systems, where a single metro car may informally be called a واگن.
