What it means

تورم (tavarrom) means swelling or inflammation. It is borrowed from Arabic, where it is the form-V verbal noun (masdar) from the root w-r-m, meaning to swell. The word carries a formal, clinical register and is the term doctors and nurses use when describing edema, localized swelling after injury, or inflammatory conditions. In everyday speech, some speakers also use آماس (amas) for swelling, though تورم is the standard medical term.

How to use it

  • ناحیه تورم پیدا کرده و باید بررسی بشه. (nahiye tavarrom peida karde va bayad barresi beshe.) “The area has developed swelling and needs to be examined.”
  • دکتر گفت تورم مفصل نگران‌کننده‌ست. (doktor goft tavarrom mafsal negaran-konande-st.) “The doctor said the joint swelling is concerning.”
  • بعد از عمل تورم خیلی طبیعیه. (bad az amal tavarrom kheili tabii-ye.) “After surgery, swelling is very normal.”
  • برای کاهش تورم، یخ روش بذار. (baraye kahesh tavarrom, yakh rush bezar.) “Put ice on it to reduce the swelling.”

Cultural note

In Iranian clinical practice, تورم is used alongside its Latin-rooted equivalent in medical reports, but patients and physicians both default to this Arabic-origin term in spoken conversation. Traditional Iranian remedies for swelling, such as applying سنجد (oleaster) leaf poultices or drinking دمنوش (herbal infusions), remain in use in rural areas alongside modern anti-inflammatory medication.
