What it means

سوسمار (susmâr) refers to the monitor lizard, and more broadly to any large lizard. The word is very old in Persian, recorded in classical dictionaries, and attested since the classical period as a word for a large lizard. In Iran the word most commonly refers to the desert monitor (Varanus griseus), a powerful lizard that can reach over a metre in length and is found across the arid central plateau. For smaller lizards, speakers usually say مارمولک (mârmulak). The word سوسمار is neutral in register and understood across all Persian-speaking regions.

How to use it

  • یه سوسمار بزرگ تو کویر دیدیم. (Ye susmâr-e bozorg tu kavir didim.) “We saw a big monitor lizard in the desert.”
  • سوسمار سریع فرار کرد. (Susmâr sari’ farâr kard.) “The monitor lizard ran away quickly.”
  • سوسمار از موش‌ها و حشرات تغذیه می‌کنه. (Susmâr az mushhâ o hasharât taghziye mikone.) “The monitor lizard feeds on mice and insects.”
  • بچه‌ها از سوسمار ترسیدن. (Bachehâ az susmâr tarsidan.) “The children got scared of the monitor lizard.”

Cultural note

The desert monitor is one of the largest and most recognisable reptiles of the Iranian plateau, known for its intelligence relative to other lizards and its ability to thrive in extreme heat. In some rural desert communities in Yazd and Kerman provinces, the monitor lizard is viewed with a mixture of respect and wariness. It plays no significant role in classical Persian poetry, but it is a recurring subject in natural history writing about Iran’s fauna, and its striking appearance makes it memorable to any traveller crossing the Dasht-e Kavir or Dasht-e Lut deserts.
