What it means

سونوگرافی (sonogerâfi) is the Persian term for an ultrasound examination, the diagnostic imaging procedure that uses sound waves to produce images of internal organs. The word is borrowed from French sonographie (itself built on Latin sonus, sound, and Greek graphein, to write or record). Persian absorbed the term with a small phonetic shift: the French final syllable became -fi rather than -fie, matching the common Persian pattern for European loanwords ending in -y or -ie. In clinical conversation there is no simpler colloquial substitute. Patients, doctors, and nurses all use سونوگرافی at the same register. You will sometimes hear اکوگرافی (ekogerâfi) used interchangeably in informal speech.

How to use it

  • دکتر سونوگرافی نوشت (doktor sonogerâfi nevesht) “The doctor wrote a referral for an ultrasound”
  • سونوگرافی شکمم کردم (sonogerâfi-e shekamam kardam) “I had an abdominal ultrasound”
  • نتیجه سونوگرافی خوب بود (natije-ye sonogerâfi khub bud) “The ultrasound result was good”
  • مرکز سونوگرافی کجاست؟ (markaz-e sonogerâfi kojâst?) “Where is the ultrasound center?”

Cultural note

Prenatal ultrasound is one of the most common medical procedures in Iran, and a pregnancy is rarely confirmed without at least one سونوگرافی early on. Private imaging centers (مرکز تصویربرداری, markaz-e tasvir-bardâri) offer ultrasound independently of hospitals, and patients carry printed or digital images from the scan as a report. The word has been fully integrated into Persian medical bureaucracy: it appears on prescription forms, insurance receipts, and clinic signs without any Persian-origin alternative competing with it.
