What it means

سنجاب (sanjâb) is the Persian word for squirrel. It traces back to Middle Persian and was later adopted into Arabic and Turkish, rather than the other way around. This borrowing direction is plausible historically: squirrels are not native to the arid regions of the Arabian Peninsula, so Arab speakers encountered the animal mainly through contact with Persian-speaking regions and adopted the existing Persian term. The grey squirrel is the variety most Persian speakers picture when they hear this word. There is no common colloquial synonym in everyday spoken Persian.

How to use it

  • یه سنجاب داشت از درخت بالا می‌رفت. (ye sanjab dasht az derakht bala miraft.) “A squirrel was climbing up the tree.”
  • سنجاب‌ها آجیل ذخیره می‌کنن برای زمستون. (sanjab-ha ajil zakhire mikonan baraye zemeston.) “Squirrels store nuts for winter.”
  • بچه‌م یه سنجاب کوچیک پیدا کرد توی پارک. (bachche-am ye sanjab-e kuchik peida kard tu-ye park.) “My kid found a little squirrel in the park.”
  • پالتوی سنجاب گرمه. (palto-ye sanjab garme.) “A squirrel-fur coat is warm.”

Cultural note

In pre-modern Iran, سنجاب referred not only to the live animal but also to its grey fur, which was prized in tailoring and mentioned in classical poetry and merchant records. The word appears in medieval Persian texts in discussions of valuable furs traded along Silk Road routes. Today the animal sense is the only common use, and سنجاب is mainly encountered in parks and in children’s books, where the squirrel is typically portrayed as a cheerful hoarder preparing for winter.
