What it means
ساندویچ (sândevich) means “sandwich.” In Iran, the word covers cold deli sandwiches, hot pressed rolls, and fast-food style burgers in long buns. The pronunciation softens the English original.

How it entered Persian
The word came into Persian via European cuisine in the early 20th century, gaining real traction with Tehran’s post-WWII fast-food culture. By the 1970s ساندویچی shops (sandwich shops) were a fixture in commercial neighborhoods. The English source word stuck, with Persian phonology smoothing out the consonant cluster.
Cultural note
A ساندویچی is a specific kind of small shop selling pressed hot sandwiches: bologna, hot dog, chicken, beef tongue, sometimes shawarma. The bread is usually a French-style baguette cut lengthwise. It is fast, cheap, and a staple of late-night urban eating in Tehran, Shiraz, and Isfahan.
