What it means
روتختی (ru-takhti) is the decorative cover spread over a made bed. The word is a straightforward native Persian compound: رو (ru) means “on top of” and تخت (takht) means “bed” or “platform,” both inherited from Old Persian. The روتختی is used for appearance and light protection rather than warmth, which sets it apart from a لحاف (lahâf, a quilted comforter) or a پتو (patu, a blanket). In some households it is removed at night and folded at the foot of the bed.

- روتختی رو مرتب کن قبل از اینکه مهمون بیاد. (ru-takhti ro moratab kon qabl az inke mehmun biyâd.) “Straighten the bedspread before the guests arrive.”
- این روتختی با اتاق جور نیست. (in ru-takhti bâ otâq jur nist.) “This bedspread does not match the room.”
- روتختی رو شستم و آویزون کردم. (ru-takhti ro shostam o âvizun kardam.) “I washed the bedspread and hung it up.”

Cultural note
In Iranian bedrooms a well-dressed bed is considered a mark of a tidy household, and guests passing a bedroom doorway are expected to see a smooth, presentable روتختی. Floral and paisley patterns remain popular choices, though plain linen designs have grown common in urban apartments. The word تخت itself historically referred to a raised wooden platform used as a seat or bed, a meaning that survives in compounds like تختجمشید (Takht-e Jamshid, Persepolis).
