What it means

روستا (rustâ) means “village,” a small rural settlement smaller than a town. The word descends directly from Middle Persian rōstāg and is one of the most ancient terms in the Persian lexicon for a settled community. It is the neutral, standard term you will see in official documents, textbooks, and ordinary conversation. A close synonym is ده (deh), which is shorter and more colloquial, often carrying a slightly more informal or rustic flavor. In formal administrative writing, روستا is always preferred over ده.

How to use it

  • پدربزرگم توی یه روستای کوچیک بزرگ شده. (Pedarbozorgam tuy-e ye rustây-e kuchik bozorg shode.) “My grandfather grew up in a small village.”
  • ما تابستون رفتیم روستا. (Mâ tâbestun raftim rustâ.) “We went to the village for the summer.”
  • این روستا برق نداره. (In rustâ barq nadâre.) “This village has no electricity.”
  • مردم روستا خیلی مهمون‌نوازن. (Mardom-e rustâ kheyli mehmun-navâzan.) “Village people are very hospitable.”

Cultural note

Despite rapid urbanization over the past century, Iran still has tens of thousands of روستا settlements, many of them perched in mountain valleys or tucked along desert edges. Rural-to-urban migration has left many villages with aging populations, which is a recurring topic in Iranian journalism and policy. In Persian literature and film, the روستا often represents a simpler, more authentic way of life in contrast to the crowded, fast-paced شهر (city), a tension that shapes much of modern Iranian storytelling.
