What it means
رانندگی (rânandegi) means driving, the act or skill of operating a motorized vehicle. It is a verbal noun derived from the pure Persian verb راندن (rândan), which has the root meaning of pushing, propelling, or driving something forward. The suffix -andegi (a combination of the present stem suffix -ande and the nominalizing suffix -gi) creates a noun denoting the habitual activity or occupation. رانندگی is used in both neutral everyday speech and formal contexts. The person who drives is a راننده (rânande), and the compound word رانندگی کردن (rânandegi kardan) means «to drive» as an action.

Driving in Iran, especially in major cities, is widely regarded as one of the most stressful رانندگی experiences in the world, with Tehran consistently ranking among cities with the worst traffic and road behaviour. Despite this, car ownership is a major social aspiration, and رانندگی lessons are a rite of passage for young Iranians. Women have always had the legal right to drive in Iran (unlike neighbouring Saudi Arabia until 2018), and female drivers are a normal and unremarkable part of daily traffic.
