What it means
پرینت کردن (perint kardan) means to print something, typically a document, photo, or file from a computer or phone. It follows the extremely common Persian pattern of borrowing a foreign noun and attaching کردن (kardan, to do) to create a verb. The noun form پرینت (perint) on its own means a printout or a print job. The Academy of Persian Language equivalent is چاپ کردن (châp kardan), from the word چاپ (châp, print, press), which entered Persian from Hindi and is used in formal writing and on printer menus. In spoken Persian, however, especially among younger speakers, پرینت کردن is far more common than چاپ کردن for the everyday act of printing from a device.
How to use it
- باید این رو پرینت بگیرم. (Bâyad ino perint begiram.) “I need to print this.”
- پرینترت وصله؟ (Perinteret vasle?) “Is your printer connected?”
- ده تا کپی پرینت کن. (Dah tâ kapi perint kon.) “Print ten copies.”
- پرینتم گیر کرد. (Perintam gir kard.) “My print job got stuck.”
Cultural note
Despite the growth of digital documentation, printing remains an everyday necessity in Iran for official paperwork, university assignments, and government forms. Print shops, known as کپیشاپ (kapi-shâp) or دفتر فنی (daftar-e fanni), are found on virtually every university street and city block. The word پرینت is so embedded that many Iranians use it even when speaking formally, though educated and official registers still prefer چاپ. The loanword also spawned the noun پرینتر (perintar) for the device itself.
