What it means
پیشرفت (pishraft) means “progress” or “advancement”. It is a pure Persian verbal noun formed from پیش (pish, forward) and رفت (raft, the past stem of رفتن, to go), so literally “a going forward”. The word covers a wide range of meaning: academic improvement, economic development, technological advancement, and personal growth all fall under پیشرفت. A close synonym is توسعه (tose’e), borrowed from Arabic and used more in formal development discourse, while پیشرفت feels native and is used freely across all registers.
How to use it
- پیشرفتش توی درس خیلی خوبه. (pishraft-ash tu-ye dars kheyli khube.) “His progress in his studies is very good.”
- کشور به پیشرفت بیشتری نیاز داره. (keshvar be pishraft-e bishtar-i niyâz dâre.) “The country needs more progress.”
- این پروژه پیشرفت زیادی داشته. (in poroje pishraft-e ziâd-i dâshte.) “This project has made a lot of progress.”
- با پیشرفت تکنولوژی همه چی عوض شده. (bâ pishraft-e teknolozhi hame chi avaz shode.) “With technological advancement everything has changed.”
Cultural note
پیشرفت carries a strongly positive charge in Iranian public life. Political speeches, school textbooks, and state media invoke it constantly when describing national development goals. The word also appears in personal contexts: a child’s academic پیشرفت is a source of family pride, and the phrase خوب پیشرفت کردی (you have progressed well) is a common teacher’s encouragement. Its purely Persian origin gives it a warm, unambiguous feel that loanword alternatives like توسعه lack in everyday speech.
