What it means
پیگیری (peygiri) is a genuinely Persian compound formed from پی (pey, meaning trace or track) and گیری, the verbal noun of گرفتن (to take or to hold), giving it the sense of tracking something down. In everyday use it means following up on a request, a case, or a delivery. You can contrast it with درخواست (darkhâst), which is the initial submission: پیگیری is what you do after that, when nothing moves on its own.

- باید پیگیری کنم ببینم کجاست. (bâyad peygiri konam bebinam kojâst.) “I need to follow up and see where it is.”
- پیگیری پروندهام خیلی وقت گرفت. (peygiri-ye parvande-am kheyli vaqt gereft.) “Following up on my file took a lot of time.”
- بدون پیگیری کار پیش نمیره. (bedun-e peygiri kâr pish nemi-re.) “Without follow-up nothing moves forward.”
- شماره پیگیری داری؟ (shomâre-ye peygiri dâri?) “Do you have a tracking number?”
Cultural note
In Iran the concept of پیگیری is almost a life skill. Government offices, banks, and service providers routinely require applicants to call back, show up again, or find the right person to speak to before a case progresses. The term شماره پیگیری (tracking number) has also become widespread in online shopping and government portals, bringing this word into everyday digital life as well.
