What it means
پستهای (peste-i) describes the specific colour of the inside of a pistachio: a soft, muted yellow-green that is lighter and more subdued than grass green. The word is formed from پسته (peste), the Persian word for pistachio, with the suffix ای (-i) making it a colour adjective. This is the same pattern as فیروزهای (firuze-i, turquoise) and قهوهای (qahve-i, brown). پسته itself is a genuine Persian word of ancient origin, and Greek “pistake” and Latin “pistacia” both borrowed from the Iranian language family. A loose synonym for a similar colour is سبز روشن (sabz-e rowshan, light green), but پستهای is more specific and more elegant.
How to use it
- دیوار اتاقم رو پستهای رنگ کردم. (Divâr-e otâqam ro peste-i rang kardam.) “I painted my room pistachio green.”
- اون کت پستهای که داری خیلی بهت میاد. (Un kot-e peste-i ke dâri kheyli behet miyâd.) “That pistachio-green jacket you have really suits you.”
- روبالشیها رو پستهای گرفتیم. (Rubâleshi-hâ ro peste-i gereftim.) “We got the pillowcases in pistachio green.”
- بستنی پستهای رنگ قشنگیه. (Bastani-ye peste-i rang-e qashangieh.) “Pistachio ice cream is a beautiful colour.”
Cultural note
Iran is one of the world’s largest producers of pistachios, with the Kerman and Rafsanjan regions supplying a significant share of global output. Because the nut is so central to Persian cuisine, hospitality, and daily life, its colour became a named colour term in its own right. پستهای appears regularly in interior design, fashion, and traditional Persian crafts as a favoured soft shade. The colour also appears in classic Iranian tile work and textile patterns, where pale greens were prized alongside the deeper blues and reds of the palette.
