What it means
دگرگونی (degarguni) means transformation or metamorphosis, referring to a deep change in form, nature, or condition. The word is built from Persian roots: دگر (degar) means other or different, گون (gun) means manner or form, and the suffix ی (i) turns it into an abstract noun. It is a formal register word, more likely to appear in written text, academic discussion, or literary prose than in casual conversation. A lighter everyday synonym is تغییر (taghyir, from Arabic), which simply means change. دگرگونی implies something more thoroughgoing, closer to a metamorphosis than a simple adjustment. In biology, it is used for metamorphosis, such as the transformation of a caterpillar into a butterfly.
How to use it
- جامعه در حال دگرگونی بزرگیه. (Jâme’e dar hâl-e degarguni-ye bozorgiyeh.) “Society is undergoing a major transformation.”
- دگرگونی لارو به پروانه شگفتانگیزه. (Degarguni-ye lârv be parvâne shegeft-angize.) “The metamorphosis of a larva into a butterfly is astonishing.”
- این دگرگونی توی سیاست چند سال طول کشید. (In degarguni tu-ye siyâsat chand sâl tul keshid.) “This transformation in politics took several years.”
- فناوری دگرگونی عمیقی توی زندگی ایجاد کرده. (Fanâvari degarguni-ye amighi tu-ye zendegi ijâd karde.) “Technology has created a profound transformation in life.”
Cultural note
دگرگونی appears frequently in Persian classical and contemporary literature to describe spiritual, social, or natural change. Persian mystic poets used related imagery to describe the soul’s transformation toward the divine. In modern Iranian academic and journalistic writing, دگرگونی is a preferred term for systemic change, whether in society, politics, or science, precisely because it suggests something deeper than superficial adjustment. The word’s formal register gives it weight that the more neutral تغییر does not carry.
