پلکان is the bookish word for staircase. Iranians know it instantly, but in casual speech they reach for راهپله instead.
What it means
پلکان (pelekân) means “staircase” or “flight of stairs.” It is built from پله (pelle, “step”) plus the suffix -کان, an old Persian collective ending that turns a single unit into a sequence. So پلکان is literally “a series of steps.” The word is pure Persian and lives mainly in formal or written Persian: architectural plans, signage, technical writing, fiction. In everyday spoken Tehrani, the standard word is راهپله (râh-pelle, “path-step”). Both refer to the same physical object. Choosing پلکان signals register: a real-estate listing might use it for elegance, a friend texting directions almost never will.

Formal vs spoken
In Tehrani conversation you will hear راهپله (râh-pelle) almost every time: راهپله تاریکه (râh-pelle târik-e, “the stairwell is dark”). پلکان sounds slightly elevated in spoken Persian, the way “staircase” feels next to “stairs” in English. Use پلکان in writing or when describing architecture; reach for راهپله in casual conversation about your building.
Cultural note
Traditional Iranian houses centered on a courtyard, not a staircase, so the architectural drama of grand staircases is more European than Persian. Where پلکان appears with weight, it is usually in mosques (the staircase up to the منبر, minbar, the preaching pulpit, is a پلکان), public buildings, and old multi-story merchant houses in cities like Yazd and Kashan. The word also appears metaphorically: پلکان ترقی (pelekân-e taraqqi, “staircase of progress”) is a journalistic cliche for upward mobility, and you will hear it on news talk shows. The pure Persian roots make پلکان feel slightly older and more elegant than its everyday counterpart, which is why writers reach for it.
